BETH ZALIN, Syria — The Syriac Union Party (Gabo d’Ḥuyodo Suryoyo, SUP) marked its 21st anniversary with a dialogue session on Thursday at its branch headquarters in Beth Zalin (Qamishli), Syria, bringing together party leaders, members, and members of the Suroyo (Syriac–Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) community to discuss political developments and the future of Suroyo rights in Syria.

The session was attended by SUP Co-Chairs Sanharib Barsom and Shamiram Danho, members of its executive body and General Council, and other interested members of the Suroyo community.

The meeting opened with a minute of silence in tribute to those who lost their lives in the struggle for the community’s rights. Barsom then discussed the outcomes of his recent tour of European capitals, the main issues raised at the Brussels Conference on the future of Christians in Syria, and efforts to mobilize international support for the rights of the Suroyo people.

Participants also reviewed the party’s history and the different stages of its political and national struggle before turning to current regional and international developments.

Barsom addressed tensions involving Iran, efforts to bring weapons under state control, and attempts to limit the influence of armed groups in Lebanon, Iraq, and Yemen. He also discussed the potential implications of an anticipated US military withdrawal from Iraq.

On the domestic front, the discussion focused on developments in Hasakah Governorate, particularly efforts to integrate the Democratic Autonomous Administration of the Region of North and East Syria (DAANES) and its institutions with the Syrian government.

The session concluded with an exchange of views on the region’s future and the need to ensure that the rights and concerns of the Suroyo people are addressed in Syria’s new constitution.
