2026 Southeast High School football schedule, first glance

A Thursday night opener offers a unique opportunity for high school football teams.
It's a chance at greater exposure, as one of a handful of teams starting their season a night before the vast majority of teams. And it's a chance at greater exposure without dealing with a short week, the consequence of a Thursday or Saturday game later in the season.

No area coach has taken greater advantage of the chance to open on a Thursday night than Southeast's Pat Youel. The Pirates will open the year on Thursday night, Aug. 20, against Rootstown — their second consecutive Thursday night opener and fourth in the last eight seasons.
The Rovers are the Pirates' only "new" opponent this season, and that "new" is in quotation marks for a reason. Southeast played Rootstown every year from 2011 through 2023 when both were members of the Portage Trail Conference's County Division and many more times as members of the Portage County League.
Rootstown and Grand Valley (Week 2), which took a big step forward under new coach Matt Rosati in 2025, figure to be challenging opening opponents. The next two weeks bring two opponents, Cuyahoga Falls and Newton Falls, that went a combined 1-19 last year. And then the two following weeks bring two opponents, Crestview and Garfield, that went 19-4.
Watch for Week 7 when Southeast travels to Champion in what has become a solid rivalry, with the two programs playing for the seventh straight season and the Pirates winning a 43-35 thriller a year ago.
