2027 NFL Draft summer scouting report: Sam Leavitt, QB, LSU
The Arizona State Sun Devils went on a magical run in 2024, earning a College Football Playoff berth, a bye in the first round, and nearly taking down Texas in the second round. While 2025 found less success, quarterback Sam Leavitt used this success to catapult him to LSU through the transfer portal. Many are high on Leavitt, but is the hype maybe a bit too much? Let's talk about it.
Recruiting rank: Four-star recruit, no. 18 QB nationally in 2023
Hometown: West Linn, Oregon
Games watched: TCU, Texas Tech (BYU, Iowa State and Texas in 2024)
Brings solid upside as a rusher
Keeps his eyes downfield when escaping the pocket
Only played seven games last season due to injury, but kept the turnovers down to three
Great skill in on-the-run throws on target
Footwork when the pocket collapses is a plus
Hits the short throws with ease
Very average arm. Will hit the short throws with zip, but his throws die the further down the field they go
Playing from behind causes him to become reckless, looks to force throws
Will need to keep an eye on his foot injury
Significant step up in play moving to the SEC
Should probably add some mass to his body moving conferences, too
Sam Leavitt was heralded as the top transfer portal prospect, and that may have been a stretch. Leavitt is a relatively fine quarterback, but does not have the tools to lead a team on a deep playoff run. His style of play may translate to the NFL; his lack of arm talent will not. Leavitt gets a sixth-round grade and would be an interesting camp quarterback and will likely find his way onto a practice squad.
