As we move right along in the "3 unanswered questions" series before NFL training camps begin, we look at the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC West. This season, the 49ers will sacrifice a rivalry game and another home game at Levi's Stadium, playing them abroad, which raises the ultimate question... How many international games are too many? But that is a question for another day.

Kyle Shanahan has vowed not to rely on Christian McCaffrey as much this season as he did last year. McCaffrey had an NFL-high 413 touches and started every game last season. He is also no spring chicken anymore and should not carry such a workload. I believe it is a true statement when it comes to the passing game out of the backfield, but the 49ers want more out of McCaffrey by way of yards per carry, which he averaged (3.9) last season. All of it could spell disaster if he goes down with an injury. They should not expect an encore of last season.

Raheem Morris comes over after a few failed seasons with the Atlanta Falcons. He will be the fifth defensive coordinator for the 49ers in as many years. He and Shanahan go way back since their days in Tampa. They may need to put their heads together and figure out how to get more of a pass rush, even after last year's injury debacle derailed any hopes that the 49ers may have had on defense, even after 13 wins. If healthy, it should be much better.

Quarterback chaos: Brock Purdy went down with an injury after a Week 1 toe issue and missed eight starts after signing the richest contract in team history. Many teams inquired about backup Mac Jones, who played very well, keeping them afloat last season while Purdy was out. It is a great thing knowing that your backup is perfectly capable of coming in and picking right back up from where he left off, but keeping Purdy healthy is the most important aspect for the 49ers. This team will forever be defined strictly by its QB play.
