33rd Team analysts select Mike Green as Ravens breakout candidate
Sometimes a breakout season is less about talent and more about timing. The Baltimore Ravens have spent much of the offseason improving the environment around second-year edge rusher Mike Green, and at least two respected analysts believe that could pay dividends in a major way.
Most have followed Sam Monson and Steve Palazzolo's work for quite a while now. They're now part of Mike Tannenbaum's brand, The 33rd Team, and they identified breakout candidates for all 32 NFL teams. When it came to Baltimore, both landed on the same player, Mike Green.

Considering everything that's happened around Mike Green this offseason, it's easy to understand why there is optimism. He entered the league with plenty of promise, but like many young pass rushers, his development was always going to take time.
Now, however, the circumstances appear far more favorable. The Ravens have assembled one of the NFL's more intriguing pass-rushing groups, and Green finds himself surrounded by proven veterans who can help accelerate his growth. That's one reason expectations are climbing. The cast around him has improved, and he should explode as a result. Trey Hendrickson's arrival gives opposing offenses another elite pass-rushing threat on the other side of the Ravens' formation to worry about. That should reduce the amount of attention Green receives on obvious passing downs.
Calais Campbell returns, and his value extends beyond statistics. The veteran has built a reputation as one of the NFL's most respected leaders and mentors. Having someone with his experience available as a resource can be invaluable for a young defender still refining his craft.

Reports indicate he has added muscle to his frame this offseason, an important development for a player looking to become more complete against both the run and pass. He is optimistic that the scheme will help. During a recent appearance on The Lounge Podcast, Green expressed confidence that Jesse Minter's defensive system will unlock new possibilities for Baltimore's pass rush.
That belief isn't difficult to understand. Minter has built a reputation for creating aggressive, flexible defenses that put pressure on quarterbacks from multiple angles. If the scheme functions as intended, Green could find himself in more advantageous situations throughout the season.
Breakout predictions are easy to make in June. Proving them correct is the difficult part. Still, Green appears to have several factors working in his favor. He's stronger than he was a year ago. He's surrounded by talented veterans. He believes in the system. Respected analysts are beginning to take notice. For a player entering a pivotal second season, that's a pretty good place to start.
