Within a week, the Miami Marlins have gone from dominating the competition for a month and a half to being in danger of suffering two straight series sweeps.

The Milwaukee Brewers battered the Fightin’ Fish and won 8-6 on Saturday, extending Miami’s losing streak to five games.

"Really, the whole day, one we'll have to flush,” Marlins manager Clayton McCullough said during his postgame press conference. “Certainly not our best. I'd say one of our worst games all season long."

Marlins outfielder Griffin Conine hit a three-run home run in the ninth inning to extend his homer streak to three games. The 29-year-old son of Jeff “Mr. Marlin” Conine has hit five home runs since being activated from the 60-day injured list on June 21.

For Marlins All-Star starting pitcher Max Meyer, the 10-day rest led to rust. Meyer lasted three innings, having surrendered two runs on three hits with three walks and five strikeouts. It was only the second start of the season that he didn’t pitch at least five innings.

However, Meyer did not leave the mound on the hook for a loss. The Marlins built up a 3-0 lead in the second inning to provide him with some run support.

Javier Sanoja led off the second inning with a double, followed by a single from Liam Hicks. Sanoja scored on an RBI single by Leo Jiménez, and the Marlins added two more runs on a groundout and a sacrifice fly.

The Brewers chipped at Miami’s lead with a sacrifice fly to score Garrett Mitchell, who led off with a single.

Jackson Chourio led off the bottom of the third inning with a walk and a stolen base, and later scored on a double by William Contreras to make it a one-run game.

The Brewers took a 6-3 lead in the sixth after a four-run rally. Braden Shewmake doubled on a sharp line drive to lead off the inning. Marlins pitcher Calvin Faucher loaded the bases with two consecutive walks before giving up a two-run single to Chourio, squandering Miami’s lead.

Mitchell, who was the hero for Milwaukee in last night’s extra-inning win, drove in two more runs on a double to complete the rally. Mitchell went 3-for-5 to lead the Brewers at the plate.

The Brewers extended their lead to 8-3 in the seventh inning on a two-run double by Christian Yelich.

Faucher was charged with the blown save and his fifth loss of the season.

Shane Drohan tossed six innings with three runs allowed on five hits with nine strikeouts for the Brewers.

The Marlins will look to avoid their second consecutive sweep on Sunday with Eury Pérez (5-7, 3.78 ERA) on the mound against Robert Gasser (2-4, 5.24 ERA) and Milwaukee.
