Stanyer earned all-district honors as junior after tallying 91 tackles, six tackles for loss, five sacks and a forced fumble for the Mustangs. He also competed in basketball and track as he threw shot put and discus.
Stanyer chose K-State over offers from Air Force, Army, Cornell, Montana, Texas State, Texas-Permian Basin and Yale, as well as interest from Pittsburgh, SMU and TCU.
His primary recruiter was his position coach, defensive line coach Buddy Wyatt.

Balanced in his pursuit abilities and in holding assignments against the run, Stanyer shows quality bend for a prospect his size and ample power and strength for someone carrying considerable room to develop both physically and mentally. … Consider the following: Stanyer played some nose tackle, at Texas’ highest classification, at under 240 pounds as a senior… and did not get pushed around. Gritty strength in both his lower and upper body, Stanyer is not the type to get bullied in run defense. … K-State’s support staff seems very intrigued by Stanyer’s potential. He won’t be needed right away and that’s just fine by the coaches, but if things fall in line the way the staff hopes, he could hit the ground running in two years.
