Yemeni government airstrikes at the port and airport of Mokha in western Yemen targeted gatherings of Houthi forces on Friday, a government military source told dpa.

"Warplanes targeted gatherings of the Houthi militia at the port and airport in several airstrikes," the source said.

Damages or casualties from the bombardment were not immediately clear, while the Houthis have not issued any comment.

The strikes come a day after the Yemeni Armed Forces announced that they had begun using various weapons and firepower to eliminate any military movements by the Houthi group within a designated area of operations, warning civilians against approaching the area.

Colonel Majed al-Nazili, the official spokesman for the government army, called on civilians to stay away from gatherings of Houthi members and their military equipment.

Al-Nazili also warned civilians against using the Taiz-Mokha road until further notice for their safety.

Earlier today, the Houthis took control of Mayyun and Hanish islands at the Bab al-Mandab area overlooking the strategic strait by the same name - a day after taking control of the city of Mokha on the western coast following the withdrawal of government forces to southern Yemen.
