The scenes at full time brought to mind a cup final defeat. Steph Catley slumped to the ground, Leah Williamson stood with her hands on her hips, Alessia Russo looked genuinely distraught, and Olivia Smith — an unused substitute — was in a long conversation with a member of the coaching staff, perhaps discussing her frustration at not getting on the pitch.

It was merely one league defeat in what is, for the first time in the Women's Super League, a 26-game season. But maybe this 1-0 loss away to Chelsea was equivalent to a cup final loss: a chance of silverware slipping away.
