Bengals reportedly searching for help at an unexpected position

The Cincinnati Bengals keep stressing they are not done adding to the roster this offseason.

That usually makes one think about linebacker, cornerback and swing backup offensive tackles. For the most part, anyway.

But here comes running back talk.

While writing about NFL trade candidates to watch, ESPN’s Dan Graziano wrote about James Conner with the Arizona Cardinals and dropped a little eye-catching nugget about the Bengals.

“But it feels like one of the Cardinals' six RBs has to go, and a team looking for a reliable veteran back could make a move for Conner if he's having a hard time getting carries,” Graziano wrote. “The Bengals and Giants jump to mind; they were looking for running back help this offseason but didn't bring in much.”

It’s hard to see whether this is just straight-up reporting about the Bengals’ interest in a running back, or a reporter just playing connect-the-dots.

Does it really matter?

The Bengals didn’t add a running back in free agency or the draft, only getting undrafted free agent Kentrel Bullock. He joins the mix behind Chase Brown and Samaje Perine that has no real standouts except Tahj Brooks, a sixth-round pick last year.

Like third wideout and overall wideout depth, running back is a quiet little need in Cincinnati. They’re probably content to ride with what they have, but they’re also in win-now mode: Conner is 31 and had back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons with 15 total rushing scores during his last two healthy years. If the price is right, he’d be a great backup behind Brown.
