Brewers' Arnold Taking Responsible Approach to Deadline

With a 64-39 record heading into Saturday’s slate of games across Major League Baseball, the Milwaukee Brewers are second in the sport, only behind the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Brewers should feel good about where they are. Once again, they are defying the expectations of a small-market franchise. Especially one that lost its best pitcher from the 2025 campaign when Freddy Peralta was traded to the New York Mets while paying the often-injured and aging right-hander Brandon Woodruff a one-year, $22 million player option.

Once again, Woodruff is done for the season as his right shoulder continues to give him more problems. The Brewers also have several more pitchers on the Injured List, but Jacob Misiorowski has turned into a bonafide star, and other players on the roster have grown tremendously.

If Milwaukee simply wanted to make the playoffs, this current group is good enough. However, simply making it to October is never the goal.

The Brewers are a team that worked their way to the best record in baseball in 2025 and made it to the National League Championship Series, only to be swept by the Dodgers. There is no shame in losing to the back-to-back champs, but it is clear that if Milwaukee wants its first ring, it has to be good enough to overcome Los Angeles.

Therefore, the upcoming MLB Trade Deadline on Aug. 3 is important, and Brewers President of Baseball Operations Matt Arnold has some work to do, but he is not going to be reckless.

There is a reason why Arnold has won back-to-back Executive of the Year Awards, and his level of savvy and understanding about what is best for the organization will prohibit any missteps.

In a recent interview with Foul Territory TV, Arnold talked about the level of responsibility he and the rest of the organizations want to maintain when entering the trade landscape. He emphasized the importance of keeping an eye on the present and on the future, and it takes balance.

Arnold highlighted his desire to help the team, but to do it in a disciplined and responsible manner. He talked about how there have been chances to trade players in the past that have now blossomed into high-level contributors for the Brewers, so it is easy to understand why he would not want to make any hasty decisions.

Perhaps the Brewers will surprise us at the MLB Trade Deadline, but it is important to understand that any move made will be done with due diligence and thorough execution.
