Brewers Crush Cardinals to Sweep Doubleheader

The Milwaukee Brewers earned a convincing 10-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday to sweep their doubleheader at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.

The Brewers are now winners of four-straight games, and Tuesday evening’s rout broke a cycle of one-run victories that defined the previous three games. How did they do it?

In the first game of the doubleheader, Milwaukee was able to put together a 10-hit effort, but it only resulted in four runs. However, the second game yielded much better results in terms of scoring.

After notching just one hit in the first two innings, the Brewers got on the board in the third after rookie Cooper Pratt opened the frame with a leadoff triple, the first of his career, which was followed up by a Christian Yelich groundout that brought Pratt home.

In the top of the fifth inning, Milwaukee struck again. This time, another rookie had his time to shine when Luis Lara, who was making his MLB debut, hit a two-run single to right field to give the Brewers a 3-0 lead.

After the Cardinals responded in the bottom of the sixth via a Nelson Velazquez home run to make it a 3-2 game, Milwaukee used the seventh inning to tip the scales in its favor.

The inning began with a leadoff home run by Joey Ortiz to left-center field, which marked his third home run of the season and his fifth hit of the day. After Yelich struck out and Lara drew a walk, Brice Turang hit his second double of the day to score Lara and give the Brewers a 5-2 lead.

Subsequently, Andrew Vaughn hit a single, and Jake Bauers drew a walk to load the bases. This set up Gary Sanchez, who provided another hit.

Sanchez launched a single to left field that drove in Turang and Vaughn to make it a 7-2 game. At that point, Milwaukee still had two outs to work with, and Jackson Chourio delivered an RBI single of his own.

With a comfortable 8-2 lead, Pratt stepped up to the plate again to do more damage. This time, it was in the form of a two-run double that scored Sanchez and Chourio. With a 10-2 lead in their favor, the Brewers were cruising in the proverbial driver’s seat.

Gasser Goes the Distance

After Jacob Misiorowski’s strong outing in the first game of the day, Milwaukee turned to left-hander Robert Gasser to take the mound for the evening matchup.

Gasser did not disappoint as he provided the Brewers with 7.2 innings of work and struck out four batters while allowing four hits, two earned runs, and a walk. Of his eight starts this season, Tuesday’s outing was the longest Gasser had pitched.

After Gasser got the first two outs of the eighth inning, he was replaced by Craig Yoho after he hit Jimmy Crooks with a pitch. Yoho carried the Brewers the rest of the way by delivering 1.1 innings and one strikeout.

Milwaukee has won the first three games in the five-game set against St. Louis, and it will look for its fourth win against the Cardinals on Wednesday at 6:45 p.m. CT.
