Brian Mitchell with accurate assessment of Commanders' 2026 offseason

Thank you, Brian Mitchell!

I have gotten so irritated and frustrated with every week since NFL free-agent signings began; it's the same thing at least a couple of times a week. Each week, it's been one or both of these I hear and or read: 1) "Have the Washington Commanders done enough to give Jayden Daniels enough help on offense?" 2) "The Commanders haven't done enough this offseason to help Jayden Daniels and this offense."

Each week, I've honestly replied the same way, disagreeing with those who are confidently sure of themselves: the Commanders didn't provide Daniels with enough help on offense. I've asserted that you can only do so much in one offseason, and yes, Commanders GM Adam Peters has certainly provided more than enough change to help this team be better in 2026.

Friday, Mitchell was asked by co-host JP Finlay during their 106.7 The Fan show, BMitch & Finlay, "What player or players do you think it's most important for Jayden to have the kind of season where this team matters in January? What player or players do you think are required to have that good, healthy season to get Jayden to that point?"

Mitchell responded, "This is going to confuse you and probably other people. The revamped defensive line." And then he paused before continuing. I loved Mitchell's response because I've been saying all along that this team was not a bad offensive team last season. But they were undoubtedly a horrible defensive team. Therefore, Adam Peters did what he was supposed to do. He addressed the area that needed more new personnel: the defense.

Mitchell continued, "They need to play better, you know why? Because if they can put pressure on another team's quarterback, you give our secondary chances. And if they give them chances, we get the ball back more often. I would love to go into any season with Jayden Daniels getting extra possessions of the football."

Brian Mitchell nailed it! Hey, when 22 people are on the field, that is a game that requires quite a bit more teamwork. Remember, "Sometimes the best offense is a good defense, and sometimes the best defense is a good offense."
