Bulgarian police have launched an investigation after a group of Jewish teenagers from Italy were allegedly threatened by neo-Nazis outside their hotel.

Police said on Tuesday that they were examining reports in Bulgarian and Italian media that hooligans had gathered outside a hotel where the teenagers were staying.

Victor Fadlun, president of Rome's Jewish community, had earlier shared a report on X alleging that neo-Nazis shouted the Nazi-era slogan "Sieg Heil" outside the hotel on Sunday. A video showed a group wearing black T-shirts performing Nazi salutes.

The incident took place in the Bulgarian ski resort of Bansko, the Bulgarian newspaper 24 Chasa reported.

According to public broadcaster BNR, the Italian teenagers were attending a two-week international seminar for young people of Jewish heritage.

Police in Bansko reportedly prevented a "physical confrontation" at the hotel following a "verbal conflict" between two groups of teenagers. Bulgarian youths had "insulted and provoked" a group of foreign teenagers of Jewish origin, the report said.

"Our children cannot travel freely in Europe without being subjected to violence and verbal attacks by anti-Semites," Fadlun wrote on X.

He said the group returned after police intervened, again blocking the hotel entrances and threatening and shouting at the Jewish teenagers.

Rome's Jewish community strongly condemned the incident as another act of anti-Semitic violence.

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani expressed solidarity with the Italian Jewish group on X.
