Can Jesse Minter Correct the Ravens Biggest Issue?

The Baltimore Ravens thought it was best to shake things up this offseason, moving on from longtime head coach John Harbaugh.

Harbaugh's exit was due to the team growing stagnant in terms of falling short in significant games, including during the playoffs. With Jesse Minter now running the show, could he be the right coach to help the Ravens get over these shortcomings?

Having the kind of All-Pro and Pro Bowl talent that Baltimore has would lead many to believe they would constantly be up for Super Bown contention, but that has not been the case. For some reason, the playoffs have long been their Achilles heel.

The Ravens believe Minter could be the guy who could get them over the hump; however, it is easier said than done.

Baltimore has plenty of questions to answer entering the 2026 season, but none looms larger than whether Minter can help the franchise overcome its postseason shortcomings and late-game struggles when the stakes are highest.

"Baltimore has allowed the third-most points in the fourth quarter over the past six seasons and has recorded a 3-6 mark in the postseason in Jackson's eight seasons," wrote Jamison Hensley, who covers the Ravens for ESPN. "The theme for Minter's first season has been "Be your best when your best is needed," which the Ravens hope will get them over the hump in close games and in the playoffs.”

It’s no secret that the Ravens have struggled mightily down the stretch in important games.

A prime example of that last season was the Ravens' season opener against the Buffalo Bills. Baltimore allowed 16 unanswered points in the final four minutes of the fourth quarter.

As for the playoffs, Jackson has appeared in eight playoff games, but holds a 3-5 record. In addition, the Ravens under Jackson have not won consecutive playoff games.

Their time in close games and in the playoffs has been plagued by fourth-quarter collapses, costly turnovers, and an inability to close out matchups against playoff contenders.

It’s something that has haunted the Ravens over the last few seasons, resulting in their not appearing in the Super Bowl since the 2012 season.

Minter certainly has the ability to help in that department, especially if his strong defensive mind can turn that unit around.

The Ravens' new coach relies on zone coverage, vastly different from the former regime, as they relied on blitzing and Cover-0 in critical moments.

Minter will use what worked in his time with the Chargers, using Cover-4 extensively to keep defensive backs in front of the chains and limit the explosive plays.

What Minter believes will be the difference this time around is that he is forcing players to learn his system to the point where there is "obnoxious communication" so everyone is on the same page when it matters most.

Minter has had success as the defensive coordinator, but now he has a bigger role and massive shoes to fill right out of the gate.
