Happy Cowboy Christmas! Many rodeo athletes have officially headed north of the border to compete in some of Canada’s biggest rodeos. Included in the lineup is the iconic Ponoka Stampede. With $465,000 in added money, Ponoka features one of the most unique formats in rodeo. Competitors first battle through the preliminary rounds before the top 12 in each event advance to the finals. From there, only the top four in the aggregate earn a coveted spot in the winner-take-all-style Showdown, where scores and times reset and athletes compete for the coveted Ponoka Stampede championship.

Canadian athletes rose to the top of the leaderboard throughout the week. In bareback riding, Ty Taypotat stole the spotlight with an outstanding 89.75-point ride aboard Calgary Stampede's Agent Lynx to earn the $7,500 Showdown payday. Orin Larsen, who claimed the aggregate title after winning the opening round and finishing third in the finals, tied Clint Laye for second in the Showdown, while Ethan Mazurenko finished fourth.

Two Canadian cowboys topped the Saddle bronc riding leaderboard. Quinten Taylor delivered an 88.75-point ride to win the Showdown after also winning the finals, while Zeke Thurston finished second after securing the aggregate title with 176.25 points on two head. Tanner Butner rounded out the top three.

Bull rider Grady Young won the finals before posting a spectacular 90.25-point ride aboard Vold Rodeo's All Gold Rolex to top the Showdown. Jake Gardner finished second, with no other qualified rides in the four-cowboy final.

In the timed events, Canadian steer wrestler Scott Guenthner won the first round, the finals, the aggregate, and then capped the week with a 4.7-second run to win the Showdown. Team ropers Derek Hadland and Jeremy Buhler were equally impressive, winning the opening round before adding victories in both the aggregate and the Showdown to complete their week in Ponoka.

Tie-down roping belonged to Shane Hanchey, who rallied after the preliminary rounds to capture both the aggregate and the Showdown, while Michelle Alley swept the barrel racing by winning the finals, aggregate, and Showdown. In breakaway roping, Falyn Thomson continued her strong Cowboy Christmas start by winning the second round, the aggregate, and the Showdown.

With elite competitors from across North America delivering outstanding rides and lightning-fast runs throughout the week, the Ponoka Stampede once again lived up to its reputation as one of Canada's premier rodeos, setting the stage for an exciting stretch of the summer rodeo season.
