Cannons’ spark in second half leads to third straight win

The Boston Cannons were in enemy territory Sunday afternoon as a sea of New York Atlas solar blue filled the stands in Fairfield. Despite the slow offensive start, the Cannons won 15-13 and jumped to second in the Eastern Conference.

The win didn’t come without difficulty.

With Trevor Baptiste back in the lineup for the Atlas, he gave New York’s offense a spark and caused difficulty for Andrew McMeekin in the rookie’s toughest matchup yet.

New York dominated possession time in the second quarter, and that proved costly for the Cannons defense, which let up seven goals.

“It’s funny, I was never worried about the faceoff thing,” head coach Brian Holman said at halftime. “But now, we haven’t played this much defense in a long time.”

Short-stick defensive midfielder Ben Ramsey’s first goal of the season and a two-pointer from Marcus Holman at the halftime buzzer gave the offense a bit of a boost heading to the half, cutting New York’s lead to 11-8.

“There’s a luck component to everything in life, and that one was lucky,” Holman said with a laugh.

Halftime gave the Cannons a much-needed reset. They came out energized on both sides: four goals for the offense, while the defense held New York scoreless in the third quarter.

Rookie Will Donovan played his third game at close defense and won his matchup with last year’s league MVP, Connor Shellenberger.

“He’s 3-for-3 now,” Holman said. “… He guarded two Kavanaghs and a Shellenberger in his first three close games ever as a ball player. That is unfathomable.”

A career-first hat trick from Mikey Weisshaar helped fuel Boston’s fourth-quarter finish.

It was the third straight win for a team that had previously been written out of the postseason conversation. This division matchup makes a huge statement for the 4-4 Cannons, who now trail only the Maryland Whipsnakes in the conference standings.
