A cargo ship was damaged in Russian missile attacks on Ukraine's southern Odessa region, local authorities said late on Friday.

Four of the vessel's 17 crew members were injured, the military governor of the Odessa region, Oleh Kiper, wrote on Telegram, adding that the ship was sailing under the flag of the Marshall Islands.

Kiper said "industrial infrastructure" had also been hit, damaging an administrative building, a warehouse and more than a dozen cars.

The Russian Defence Ministry said its forces had struck two ports in the Odessa region, targeting a cargo ship carrying goods for the Ukrainian military in Pivdennyi and fuel tanks in the port of Odessa.

The ministry also said four cargo ships had been attacked in the port of Mykolaiv in the neighbouring region. There was no confirmation from the Ukrainian side.

As part of its defence against Russia's invasion, which began in 2022, Ukraine has for days been carrying out drone attacks on ships calling at Russian-controlled ports in the Black Sea and the neighbouring Sea of Azov.

Russia has responded by expanding its attacks on Ukrainian ports along the Black Sea coast.
