Castle football wins Warrick County Classic in blowout fashion

BOONVILLE — Lightning delayed the first meeting between Castle and Boonville since 2002. Still, Warrick County showed up loud and proud of their respective programs, waiting at the Bennett Field gates before being allowed in.
But as the game began, Castle would put the game out of Boonville's reach in Week 5.
The Knights won 34-6 in the Warrick County Classic on September 18. It's three wins in a row for Castle since losing by one point to Mater Dei in Week 2.
"(Friday) was fast and physical," Castle coach Doug Hurt said. "We were particularly relentless on the defensive side of the ball early and held that consistency. Just glad to win this revitalized Warrick County Classic."
The win now puts the Knights ahead, 26-18, in the overall series with Boonville.
An opening-play touchdown set the tone for Castle. Junior quarterback Sawyer Winsett found junior wide receiver Jaivon Aunspach, who got behind the Pioneers secondary. The two have connected several times this season.
Boonville did have a response. A funky play that saw Boonville's Bradyn Egli catch a pass, fumble the ball and recover it led to a big gain for the senior wideout. Senior running back Mason Jones finished the drive on a trick play as he found his receiver Dawson Keller in the end zone.
Both teams missed their extra points to make it 6-6. There would be more special teams miscues as the game went on.
Keller's score would be the only points from Boonville on the night. Castle shut the door after that.
What has allowed the Pioneers offense to be successful this season is Jones' contributions in the running game, especially with Seiler's acclimation process. But the Knights defense was swarming, allowing little to no lanes for Jones and others to pursue.
And as far as the turnover battle goes, Seiler was intercepted twice by sophomore safety Rafael Iglesias.
Hurt said the group had a chip on their shoulder tonight.
"They wanted to show out well in this game because half of Warrick County would be here," Hurt said. "There were several guys that were in the backfield all night."
Boonville coach Jonathan Batts felt his team shut down as they faced more adversity in the game. A couple of injuries certainly affected the Pioneers (Tripp Kelly and Landon Boyer, notably). It led to some changes in personnel that was too much to overcome in Week 5.
"They took away our run game and forced us to put the ball in the air," Batts said. "(Hurt's) guys were ready to play, ours weren't."
While the Pioneers defense shut out Castle in the third quarter, they were unable to capitalize with the offensive possessions necessary to claw their way back into the game.
Batts is looking for a response next week against Washington. Still, the second-year coach is confident in his senior leaders. Despite this result, Boonville remains in the PAC Big School Division title race.
Castle's running backs feasted Friday. Austin Pritchard, Mo Smith Jr. and Nolan McKinney all found the end zone in Week 5. Mckinney's was most emphatic — an 87-yard touchdown run that sent the Knights faithful into a frenzy.
The offensive balance shown against Boonville was perhaps Castle's best all season.
"I want to congratulate the run game," Winsett said. "We really got going this week. We really need that in our offense if we're going to pass the ball too."
Winsett said the touchdown to Aunspach opened up the Boonville defense to the threat of their rushing attack. Pritchard, Smith Jr. and McKinney answered the call.
This matchup meant something more to the Castle community and to the team. Now against an undefeated Reitz team at the Bowl in Week 6, a win next week would mean just as much.
Hurt said it to his group. On Sept. 25, it is personal.
"We have a good rivalry with the West Side," Hurt said. "I will leave it at that."
