The Central Council of Muslims in Germany (ZMD) released a statement on Monday condemning the deadly attack on Berlin Pride.

"Wherever people are targeted with violence because of their identity or way of life, the fundamental values of our society are under attack," the umbrella organization wrote. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families and all those who had to witness this terrible act."

One person was killed and 29 injured in Berlin's Tiergarten park on Saturday amid Christopher Street Day (CSD) celebrations, the name used for Pride events in Germany.

The 21-year-old suspect, Abdul B, reportedly drove into a crowd with a van and attacked passers-by with a machete before fleeing, leading to a day-long manhunt that ended in him being shot dead by police.

Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said on Sunday that the attack appeared to be motivated by Islamist terrorism.

The Cologne-based ZMD said that if Islamist terrorism was confirmed to be the motive, the case would be another example "in which an extremist ideology misuses religious references to justify hatred and violence and to set people against one another."

The protection of human life is one of the fundamental principles of Islam, the group said, adding that there is no justification for violence against innocent people.

"No one should be subjected to violence on the grounds of their sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, origin or other personal characteristics," the statement continued. "Particularly at a time when extremist ideologies are dividing our society and seeking to pit people against one another, we need prudence, determination, solidarity and a clear stance against all forms of hatred."
