Chelsea were left to rue a catalogue of missed opportunities as Aston Villa escaped Stamford Bridge with a 1-1 draw in the opening Barclays Women's Super League fixture of the season.

Lauren James gave Sonia Bompastor's side a deserved first-half lead with an emphatic finish, but despite Chelsea dominating almost every measure of the contest, they were unable to find the second goal their performance warranted.
