China’s Quanzhou region strengthens sportswear export drive
The city's producers are now selling products to over 100 countries and regions, as local companies focus on building international brands and using digital trade platforms.
The Xinhua Silk Road attributes much of this export growth to new trading models, including the "9610" cross-border e-commerce mode launched in the Quanzhou Comprehensive Bonded Area in late 2021.
Since its introduction, exports, mainly of shoes and garments, are said to have risen significantly under this scheme.
Besides digital trade, Quanzhou's sportswear and footwear sector is seeking wider international recognition by incorporating cultural and design elements into its product offerings.
Manufacturers have collaborated with cultural organisations to draw on local motifs, including Maritime Silk Road symbols and traditional southern Fujian designs. These features have been used to distinguish local brands in global markets.
"Made in Quanzhou" products now benefit from a supply chain that covers spinning, weaving, shoe materials, moulding, manufacturing, packaging, and logistics. The region is home to recognised sportswear brands such as ANTA, 361°, and PEAK.
In recent years, research and development efforts have led to the introduction of new fabrics and extended product ranges, particularly in professional sports and outdoor apparel.
Quanzhou's push towards international markets also includes setting up overseas warehouses, direct sales outlets, and regional operation centres. These measures are aimed at improving delivery capacity and supporting localised operations in target regions.
Logistics improvements, including international liner and aviation services, have further facilitated prompt delivery to overseas customers.
This growth is linked to a broader, three-year action plan announced by Quanzhou authorities in March 2025, which aims to establish the city as an international fashion centre by 2027. The plan includes measures to integrate fashion-related industry, design, culture, and lifestyle to create a globally distinctive fashion sector.
Local officials have highlighted the combined impact of e-commerce, cultural integration, and improved logistics as key factors in Quanzhou's expanding presence in the global sportswear and footwear market.
