PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WPRI) — The Rhode Island Chinese Dragon Boat Races and Taiwan Day Festival took place Saturday.

The annual event happened along the Festival Pier in Pawtucket.

The races use unique Taiwanese-style dragon boats from the Republic of China.

The festival had a selection of Asian food trucks, vendors, the Taste Of Taiwan, and activities for children and families.

"It started as a grass roots event to bring attention to the river and over these 25 year it's grown into this very big event that brings teams into the northeast as far as Washington D.C. to race," said James Toomey, the Executive Director of the Blackstone Valley Tourism Council.

"This pulls a lot of the communities together and showcases the Taiwanese and Chinese community that's here in Rhode Island."
