The San Diego Padres did not just lose to the Chicago Cubs. That’s the easy headline. The attention grabber.  What happened is they got embarrassed so badly that their MLB trade deadline conversation needs to change. A 23-3 loss is not normal. It was the worst loss in franchise history, and it came at the end of a series sweep. When a supposed contender gets dragged like that in July, somebody in the front office needs to stop acting like this is business as usual

The Padres love big swings. That is their brand. Star power, aggressive trades, wild roster bets, all of it. But there comes a point where bravado starts looking really stupid. Maybe, just maybe, San Diego should not be buying. Maybe the Padres should be honest enough to ask whether this team is actually worth adding to.

That does not mean a full teardown. Nobody is saying to trade every recognizable player and start handing out apology letters to season-ticket holders. But the Padres need to look at this roster coldly. If they are not built to survive a real playoff race, then chasing one more shiny deadline piece just because it feels aggressive would be a mistake.

This is where smart teams separate themselves from loud teams. A loud team reacts to humiliation by making a desperate trade. A smart team asks why the humiliation happened in the first place.

San Diego still has talent. That is what makes this so annoying. The Padres are not hopeless. They are just inconsistent enough to be dangerous to themselves. And if the next few weeks do not show real stability, selling off select pieces should absolutely be on the table.

The 23-3 loss did not end their season. But it should have ended the illusion that San Diego can just swagger its way through the deadline. The Padres have to prove they are buyers. Right now, they look a lot closer to a team that should be listening to offers.
