Despite the ongoing contract negotiations, New England Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez showed up for training camp.

For those wondering about the extent of his participation, Gonzalez is expected to participate in practice, according to Patriots coach Mike Vrabel on Friday.

“He is here. I expect him to participate,” Vrabel said. “So, those contract negotiations are ongoing between the club and his agents. And I’m excited about having Christian back here with us and the impact he can make on our football team. Really enjoy the person, enjoy the player, and that’s what I’m looking forward to.”

Gonzalez's contract situation has been one of the biggest stories of the offseason.

The star defensive back is eligible for a contract extension, but he has yet to agree to a new deal with the team. Gonzalez has proven himself to be among the best cornerbacks in the NFL, and he might have a chance to reset the market at the position.

The Patriots picked up the fifth-year option on his contract, which technically gives them through the 2027 season to hammer out a new deal. However, things could get complicated with Gonzalez currently set to make $4.8 million in 2026. The Patriots might have to agree to a long-term deal or sweeten his current contract to keep him on the field.

With that said, Gonzalez's arrival, along with Vrabel's confidence, is promising that a deal could eventually get done. It's simply a matter of time.
