The Los Angeles Dodgers have spent much of the 2026 season finding ways to win despite some significant injuries and constant roster adjustments.

Even as questions have surrounded their pitching staff and lack of production from several key contributors, the defending National League champions have continued to lean on veteran stars in big moments and seem poised for another deep playoff run ahead.

Friday night's matchup against the in-state rival Los Angeles Angels was yet another example of the team’s winning formula, though it came with a unique twist that’s causing some controversy off the field as well.

Los Angeles Dodgers Veteran Makes Pride Night Statement With Hat Choice

Before superstar infielder Freddie Freeman could deliver the latest heroic hit of his career last week, veteran reliever Blake Treinen grabbed some attention during the team’s Pride Night celebration.

“The Dodgers celebrated Pride Night on Friday night at Uniqlo Field and donned their traditional Pride Night hats,” Thomas L. Murray reported for the New York Post. “Just before Freddie Freeman hit a walk-off home run in the ninth inning to give the Dodgers a 1-0 victory over the Angels, Blake Treinen came out of the bullpen in the top half of the inning and wore a different hat.”

While the rest of the team wore Pride-themed hats with rainbow Dodgers logos, Treinen wore the traditional blue-and-white version. The choice certainly seemed intentional, particularly following long-time Dodger pitcher Clayton Kershaw’s decisions to write Bible verses on his hats during Pride events.

Before Freddie Freeman Hit Los Angeles Dodgers Walkoff, Blake Treinen Turned Heads With Pride Night Statement

The moment quickly became a topic of discussion online, particularly given Treinen's previous public comments regarding his religious beliefs.

“Treinen, by the way, is deeply religious and has been extremely open about his relationship with God,” Zach Dean wrote for OutKick. “Don't forget, last fall he honored Charlie Kirk with his hat, which went over about as well as you'd expect… Regardless, Treinen threw just one pitch, got out of the jam, and then Freddie Freeman walked it off in the bottom of the ninth.”

Freeman's home run capped a tightly contested pitchers' duel and gave Los Angeles another dramatic victory during a season in which the club has repeatedly found ways to win close games despite ongoing adversity.

But the moment has been overshadowed, at least on the national stage, by the debate surrounding Treinen's statement. As a result, the lasting baseball memory from the dramatic rivalry game might have more to do with fashion choices than another clutch homer.
