Two drones have been spotted flying over a military base in western Germany, the country's armed forces said on Friday, days after a serious incident at Leipzig airport.

At around 10 pm (2000 GMT) on Thursday evening, the security control centre at the base in Mechernich, west of Bonn, reported that two drones had been spotted flying over the site, a spokeswoman for the Bundeswehr's Operational Command confirmed.

Military police investigated the incident, the spokeswoman added. The case has been handed over to the police in Euskirchen, who have launched an investigation. The police did not initially comment on the incident.

Drone incident at Leipzig Airport

Late on Tuesday evening at Leipzig/Halle Airport, a drone equipped with explosives and a detonator was discovered near Ukrainian transport aircraft. An airport employee brought it down.

As the runway was closed, an incoming cargo aircraft was forced to abort its landing and collided with an unidentified smaller flying object, possibly a second drone. The Federal Public Prosecutor's Office has taken over the investigation.

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt spoke of a hybrid attack scenario carried out by highly professional perpetrators. He has not ruled out the possibility that what he called "foreign powers" were behind it.
