An escaped kangaroo that kept police busy in Germany has been recaptured in the municipality of Brüggen, west of Mönchengladbach, but died while being transported to a wildlife park, officials said on Thursday.

According to police reports, the animal - a wallaby, judging by its size - was first spotted on a main road. A council spokesman said it crossed the road several times and had to be caught to ensure road safety.

The kangaroo was eventually caught in a net on the fenced-off grounds of a biogas plant, the spokesman explained. The aim had been to take the marsupial to a nearby wildlife park so that it could receive appropriate care.

During the subsequent transport, it was noticed that the kangaroo was panting heavily. It died within a few seconds, the council spokesman added.

It is not yet known who owned the animal. The search for the owner is ongoing. No details are available because the kangaroo did not have a microchip, the council spokesman added.
