Europe's wildfires leave $3.5bn restoration bill

France has recorded 116,000 hectares burned by wildfires this year, the most since records began in 1949, as heatwaves fuel blazes across Europe. In the UNESCO-listed Fontainebleau forest, about 2,000 hectares have been scorched, with insurers warning of unprecedented claims and authorities saying around 70 per cent of fires were deliberately set.
