Schalke have signed former German international full back Robin Gosens, the promoted Bundesliga club said on Friday.

Gosens, 32, arrives on loan from Italy's Fiorentina. Schalke said that the deal will automatically become permanent if certain conditions are met.

According to news reports they are Schalke staying in the top flight and 24-times capped Gosens playing a certain amount of matches.

Gosens has said on several occasions that Schalke are dear to him. He has only spent one previous season in the Bundesliga, at Union Berlin, with most of his career in Italy where he played at Atalanta and Inter Milan before his term at Fiorentina.

“I want to lead by example and take on responsibility,” Gosens said at his presentation in Gelsenkirchen.

“Everyone knows I have a special connection with Schalke. I’m really looking forward to this challenge and can’t wait to give it my all on the pitch with the lads.”
