Nyack, Suffern advance to final four, Section 1 teams compete girls lacrosse regionals
Stephen Haynes, Rockland/Westchester Journal NewsSun, June 7, 2026 at 1:09 PM UTC·4 min readThe four Section 1 championship girls lacrosse teams are competing in their respective regional finals on June 7, needing a victory to reach the state semifinals.
Monroe-Woodbury High School will host the regionals, featuring Suffern, Nyack, Rye and Pleasantville talking on the Section 9 champions in their classifications.

Sister act helps send Nyack to first state semifinals since 2010
CENTRAL VALLEY - Glee quickly turned to disappointment, the players shaking their heads in disbelief. There was a bit of planning and coordination in preparation for that moment, but Nyack missed its mark because a member of the girls lacrosse team was focused on herself.

The assistant coach was literally focused on herself, mistakenly putting her camera phone in selfie mode while attempting to film the RedHawks' postgame celebration with the regional championship plaque.
"I think it was just an accident," Ella Gould said with a laugh. "But she's beautiful, so the more selfies, the merrier."
Well, few things could've made her merrier than the performance as her daughters exhausted the scoreboard while leading Nyack in a 21-10 win over Section 9's Warwick in the Class B regional final. The RedHawks advanced to the state semifinals for the first time since 2010.

Nyack (16-4) will face Long Island's Garden City in the state semifinals on June 12, 11:30 a.m. at SUNY Cortland. The RedHawks won the Class C section title last season, but lost in the regional.
"It feels amazing to get back there," said coach Kathryn Perrella, who guided them to the final four 16 years ago. "They've worked hard and overcome some obstacles this season, and this group absolutely deserves it."
Lila Gilbart added four goals, two assists and six draw controls. Casey Cummings had two goals, an assist, seven draw controls and three caused turnovers. Ava Von Kleeck had a goal and an assist, and Juliet Aversano scored twice.

Suffern rolls in regional, punching ticket to Class A state semifinals
CENTRAL VALLEY - As part of an impassioned postgame speech, Nevin Sullivan implored teammates to appreciate the opportunity before them and prepare this week with a sense of urgency.
"Even our off days can't be 'off' days," the senior told the huddled girls lacrosse team. "We'll rest our bodies, but we've got to be doing something productive."
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementThat wasn't just a nice quote to drop following a lopsided win, but those words have accompanied deeds. The Mounties have avoided the school cafeteria during this postseason run, opting instead to gather as a group and spend that period studying film of upcoming opponents.
"It's a good way to get us all together during the school day," senior Nicole DeBellis said of her teammates, who share the same "unit" lunch period. "I think us doing that shows that we're dedicated and focused on our goals."
Suffern took another big step toward that goal on June 7, rolling to an 18-6 win over Section 9's Valley Central in a Class A regional final at Monroe-Woodbury High School.
Sullivan helped the Mounties dominate the draw, winning and maintaining possession, while Madison McCarren had seven goals and an assist and Elizabeth Torres had six goals and two assists to lead an offense that began pulling away late in the first quarter.

The Mounties lost in the state final last season and that, understandably, left with them a bitter taste. The returning players were determined to get back there and give themselves a shot at redemption.
"We've had that in mind since day one, and we're willing to do whatever it takes," Sullivan said. "We love to play, and we're happy that our season continues on, but we really want to win."
