Foxes shut out Huntsville 1-0

HIGH POINT — Carolina Core FC continued its run of strong midseason play.

The Foxes maintained pressure much of the match, scored the lone goal just before halftime, and shut out Huntsville City FC 1-0 in MLS NEXT Pro soccer on a hot, stormy Sunday evening at Truist Point.

“A great performance from the group,” CCFC interim head coach Jake Davis said. “Really a mature performance. They put together long spells on the ball. And when we didn’t have the ball, it looked like us. It was a great performance from them all around.”

Thomas Raimbault scored the lone goal of the match in the 44th minute for the Foxes (3-8-6, 17 points), who in their last four matches have won two outright and added another in PKs following a cool start to the season.

The opportunity began with a ball in from the left end line. A quick shot by CCFC was stopped, and the ball caromed out for another look. The ball hit off a defender that the Foxes argued was a handball.

But it deflected directly back to Raimbault near the top of the penalty area for a yet another attempt that finally found the net.

“(Ricardo Montenegro) played the ball in the first time. I hit it and the keeper made a good save,” Raimbault said. “And then it kind of ricocheted back to me. I took the touch and then just smacked it, hoped it would go in and it did.”

CCFC totaled a 21-5 advantage in shots for the match — including 7-2 on goal. Huntsville (5-7-3, 19 points) had a couple of offensive opportunities, but the Foxes certainly created the majority of the scoring looks.

CCFC also finished with a 13-1 edge in corner kicks.

“I think in the first half we created a lot of really good chances,” Raimbault said. “Creating all those chances is going to build pressure. And eventually I think as a team, we know we’re going to score and it’s just about when.

“And we did that in the first half. We had more chances in the second half as well. Unfortunately, we didn’t capitalize, but I think building that pressure helps us a lot. And when we score early, we usually win games.”

Nick Holliday anchored a solid defensive performance with a pair of saves in goal for CCFC, which will next play Sunday at CT United FC before hosting Chattanooga FC on Sunday, July 12, at 5 p.m. for Heroes Night.

“It’s definitely trending the right way,” said Davis, who highlighted the defense in leading to offensive pressure. “The energy, the enthusiasm is there. And fair play to the boys — they’re enjoying themselves out there.”
