Standing in their way is Morocco, with the match set to be officiated by a remarkably all-Argentine refereeing crew — a striking role reversal from Argentina's VAR-heavy 3-2 victory over Egypt, which was overseen by a French referee.

All five officials — head referee Facundo Tello, assistants Jan Pablo Belatti and Gabriel Chade, fourth official Dario Herrera, and reserve assistant Cristian Navarro — hail from Argentina, making it the first match of the 2026 World Cup to feature a complete officiating team from a single country, as per The Mirror US.

FIFA's post confirming the appointment racked up over 20 million views on X in fewer than 10 hours, coming hot on the heels of an Egyptian star claiming the tournament is "rigged" following their controversial elimination.

Controversy was no stranger to Argentina's 2022 World Cup final win over France via penalty shootout, with multiple spot-kicks awarded during regulation time generating significant debate.

French referee François Letexier was on duty in Houston for Argentina's dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over Egypt — a match that triggered a major post-game outburst from Egyptian coach Hossam Hassan directed at the referees.

In reality, Argentina only secured a regulation-time victory thanks to the French referee. With Egypt 1-0 up in the second half, Mohamed Salah's exceptional pass in transition to Mostafa Ziko resulted in a second Egyptian goal.

However, a challenge on Argentine defender Lisandro Martínez, roughly 25 seconds before the Egyptian scored, was deemed a foul when reviewed by the referee following intervention from the VAR team.

Ziko managed to find the net a few minutes later, but Egypt's 2-0 advantage crumbled against an inspired Lionel Messi and Argentina. A third goal would have sent the match into extra time.

Speaking live on BBC Radio 5, Egyptian soccer expert Ahmad Yousef criticized the referee's use of VAR. Huge amounts of disappointment across Egypt. There is so much inconsistency at the moment with VAR and decisions and how far you go back to pull a decision," he said.

"The referee made the wrong decision, disallowing Egypt's second goal. There was such a long distance that had gone by, and the foul was so minimal, so I completely understand why the Egyptian coaching staff and squad are so disappointed.
