French wildfire nears Bordeaux as 200,000 forced to evacuate

Wildfire continued to spread in south-western France on Sunday, with more than 200,000 people in the region ordered to evacuate over recent days.

The largest fire, in the Gironde department, has already destroyed around 42,000 hectares of forest and scrubland and continues to advance towards Bordeaux, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez wrote on X.

During the night, the prefecture in Bordeaux ordered the precautionary evacuation of a further 55,000 people from several communities west and south-west of the city.

Firefighters reported that the blaze had temporarily generated a pyrocumulonimbus - a massive smoke cloud that creates its own weather system and winds, making the fire especially unpredictable. Around 140 homes have already been destroyed.

Interior minister warns of long battle

Despite the advancing flames, Bordeaux itself is not currently being evacuated, according to city authorities.

Mayor Thomas Cazenave, quoted by the regional newspaper L'Indépendant, said that residents were not preparing to leave the city.

However, he stressed that Bordeaux was ready to respond to any change in the situation.

French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez warned that firefighters faced a long battle.

"The fire will take a long time to bring under control," he said in an interview with La Tribune Dimanche.

Emergency services are also battling another major wildfire in the neighbouring Landes department to the south, which has burned around 3,600 hectares.

According to the local prefecture, it has been contained but has not yet been extinguished.
