The German parliament's budget committee on Wednesday approved the procurement of four new Meko A-200 DEU frigates from the TKMS naval shipbuilder to strengthen Germany's navy and meet NATO commitments.

"This will enable the German navy to fulfil its core mission of maritime anti-submarine warfare and, with it, meet our NATO commitments as quickly as possible," the Defence Ministry said in a statement.

Germany will initially order four frigates, with an option to purchase four more. The first vessel is scheduled to be delivered in 2029.

The first four warships are expected to cost around €6.3 billion ($7.4 billion). The Defence Ministry estimated that exercising the option for four additional frigates would cost a further €5.3 billion.
