The New York Giants upgraded their receiver corps this offseason for second-year quarterback Jaxson Dart.

Malik Nabers is the clear WR1, though he’s still recovering from the ACL injury and meniscus tear he suffered last season.

New York added Darnell Mooney and Calvin Austin III in free agency and drafted Malachi Fields in the third round. The Giants needed to bring in reinforcements after losing their leading receiver from last season, Wan’Dale Robinson, to the Tennessee Titans in free agency.

Jordan Raanan of ESPN believes Nabers, Mooney, Austin, Fields and Darius Slaton are a lock to make the 53-man roster.

In training camp, the Giants are set to have a competition between veteran receivers Odell Beckham Jr., Juju Smith-Schuster and Braxton Berrios for the final receiver slot on the 53-man roster.

Of those three, Raanan notes that Beckham made the “biggest impact” during mandatory minicamp, though Berrios has a chance to make the team if he makes great plays as a return man during the preseason.

Beckham’s return to the Giants is a great story, but he’s not the same player he was when he made the Pro Bowl three years in a row from 2014 to 2016. He last played for the Miami Dolphins in 2024, and made just nine receptions for 55 yards through nine games. He hasn’t had a season with more than 1,000 receiving yards since he was with the Cleveland Browns in 2019.

Beckham knows he isn’t a lock to make the 53-man roster but wanted the opportunity to have one more shot to play in the league.

“Coach [Harbaugh] and I talked about that. I think that was one of his fears,” Beckham said. “He was like, ‘I love you so much, I’ve got so much respect for you. I don’t want to bring you here and have to cut you,’ or whatever.

“I’m like, ‘Listen, I’m going out on my sword either way it goes. If that’s what you’ve got to do, you see I’m not the best or fit, then by all means I’m good with it, I can live with it.’ I can’t live with sitting at home not doing it, you know? I just couldn’t do it.”

Beckham, 33, still has the ability to make plays. However, he’ll have to keep himself healthy when the pads come on in training camp if he wants to stay on the Giants for Week 1.
