The Cleveland Guardians won't get their second--round pick from the 2026 MLB Draft to join the organization.

It's a brutal blow as Logan Schmidt was announced on Sunday as planning to play college baseball next spring.

The Guardians used the No. 59 overall pick in the draft to take Schmidt, a left-handed pitcher.

That pick has a slot value of $1.59 million.

It's not clear exactly how much the Guardians offered versus what Schmidt was seeking, but in general, this is a sign Cleveland paid higher than expected out of its bonus pool for players already signed, leaving them short of what Schmidt wanted.

Schmidt is committed to play college baseball at LSU. If he honors that specific commitment, he wouldn't be eligible for the MLB Draft again until 2029.

He does have another option. If Schmidt enrolls at a junior college, he'd be eligible again for the 2027 MLB Draft.

Schmidt is from Pomona Ganesha High School in California.

Baseball America reported Sunday that if he goes the junior college route, the destination could be Golden West College in Huntington Beach.

Interestingly, Schmidt was originally a member of the high school class of 2027 but had reclassified to get to the draft, or college, a year earlier.

Now with this lack of signing, he sort of loses that year that he initially gained.

It'll be interesting to see how Schmidt develops from here, but it's definitely a tough outcome for Cleveland.
