Hamburg fire brigade handles almost 100 storm call-outs

Hamburg's fire brigade responded to almost 100 call-outs on Friday evening as a severe storm swept through the city.

Germany's national meteorological service, the DWD, issued an official severe weather warning for the area.

A staff member at the fire brigade's operations centre logged 85 water-related incidents between 6:30 pm and 9 pm (1630-1900 GMT), along with 12 further call-outs categorized under the heading "at risk of falling" - referring to items such as fences and roof tiles.

No injuries were reported. The high volume of call-outs was said to have been manageable.

Earlier in the evening, a spokesman said call-outs were coming in "almost by the minute," but that sufficient capacity was available to handle the volume.

The southern and northern outskirts of the city were said to be particularly affected.
