189 Starts And Counting Without An F1 Victory

At the completion of the 2025 F1 season, Lance Stroll had started 189 Formula 1 grands prix across nine seasons for three teams: Williams, Racing Point, and Aston Martin. Through the end of the 2025 season, he has scored 325 career points, taken one pole position, and reached the podium three times. Has Lance Stroll ever won a race in F1? No. The Canadian sits third on the all-time list for most starts without a victory, behind only Nico Hülkenberg at 251 and Andrea de Cesaris at 208.

Stroll joined the grid in 2017 as an 18-year-old with a Formula 3 title and a father, Lawrence Stroll, who would buy the Force India team out of administration the following year and rebrand it as Racing Point. His debut season at Williams produced 40 points, 12th in the World Drivers’ Championship, and a third-place finish at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix after a chaotic race disrupted by safety car periods and a red flag. The 2018 season was far less productive. Williams had one of the slowest cars in the field, and Stroll ended the year with just 6 points before joining his father’s team for 2019.

Stroll scored 21 points and finished 15th in Racing Point’s first season, but 2020 proved far stronger: 75 points, 11th overall, a pole position at the Turkish Grand Prix in wet qualifying, and two podium finishes at the Italian and Sakhir rounds. That remains his highest single-season points total. His 2020 campaign also saw him miss the Eifel Grand Prix at the Nürburgring after contracting COVID-19.

The team became Aston Martin in 2021. Stroll scored 34 points that year, dropped to 18 in 2022, then rebounded to 74 in 2023 when Fernando Alonso arrived and the AMR23 fought at the front of the midfield in the opening rounds. Aston Martin challenged for podiums early that season and finished fifth in the Constructors’ Championship. The 2024 and 2025 seasons brought a step backwards. Stroll finished 13th in the championship in 2024 with 24 points and 16th in 2025 with 33. His best finish in both years was sixth at the Australian Grand Prix, and he went through stretches of seven consecutive pointless races in each campaign. A recurring wrist issue, stemming from a bicycle crash before the 2023 season that required surgery on his right wrist, forced him to withdraw from the 2025 Spanish Grand Prix. He also failed to start the 2024 Brazilian Grand Prix after beaching his car in the gravel on the formation lap, one of four non-starts across his 193 career entries.

Has Lance Stroll Ever Won A Race In Junior Motorsport?

Yes. Stroll won three single-seater championships before his 18th birthday: the Italian F4 Championship, the Toyota Racing Series in New Zealand, and the 2016 FIA Formula 3 European Championship with Prema Powerteam. The F3 title was the most significant of the three. Stroll won 14 of 30 rounds, sealed the championship with four races remaining, and beat runner-up Maximilian Günther by 187 points. He arrived in Formula 1 in 2017 as one of the most successful junior graduates of his generation.

Stroll’s Pole Position And Three F1 Podium Finishes

Stroll’s best qualifying session came at the 2020 Turkish Grand Prix. Istanbul Park had been resurfaced shortly before the race weekend, and the new tarmac offered almost no grip in the rain. Stroll put his Racing Point on pole, becoming the first Canadian to qualify fastest since Jacques Villeneuve at the 1997 European Grand Prix. He led 32 of the race’s 58 laps before tyre degradation dropped him to ninth by the chequered flag, as Lewis Hamilton won from sixth to clinch his seventh world title.

All three of Stroll’s career podiums are third-place finishes. The first came at the 2017 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, where the 18-year-old finished behind Daniel Ricciardo and Valtteri Bottas in a race reshaped by crashes, safety cars, and a red flag. In 2020, two podiums arrived within three races of each other: third at the Italian Grand Prix behind Pierre Gasly and Carlos Sainz, then third at the Sakhir Grand Prix behind Sergio Pérez and Esteban Ocon. Stroll has not stood on the podium since December 2020.
