Heavy rain kills woman in Japan as landslide warnings issued

Heavy rain battered parts of Japan on Monday, killing a woman after her car was flooded in an underpass in the city of Iwaki in north-eastern Fukushima prefecture, broadcaster NHK reported.

Evacuation orders in Iwaki and parts of Ibaraki and Kanagawa prefectures were later lifted. Authorities in the Fukushima town of Hirono also lifted an evacuation order for its 4,665 residents, a local official told dpa.

The Tokyo metropolitan area was also hit by the remnants of a typhoon and a storm front. Japan's weather agency issued its second-highest warning level for parts of neighbouring Chiba and Saitama prefectures and parts of Fukushima over the risk of landslides.

The agency forecast further heavy rain across wide areas along Japan's Pacific coast. The government set up an emergency task force.

Heavy rainfall has repeatedly caused disruption in Japan in recent weeks. Just days ago, authorities in central Fukui prefecture urged around 400,000 people to seek safety temporarily because of the risk of landslides. Homes and roads were flooded before the warnings were lifted.
