Hungary's government has said a failed attack involving an explosives-laden drone at Germany's Leipzig airport shows that Russia poses a threat to European security.

"Hungary is deeply concerned by the growing number and intensity of Russian hybrid activities on European soil," Foreign Minister Anita Orbán wrote on X late Tuesday.

Recent incidents in Germany demonstrated "an increasingly dangerous and reckless pattern of behaviour that poses a serious threat to European security and resilience."

"Hungary stands in full solidarity with Germany and is ready to support our partner in countering hybrid threats," Orbán added.

Hybrid threats generally involve a combination of military, economic, intelligence and propaganda tactics.

Germany said on Tuesday that Russia was responsible for last month's drone attack at Leipzig's airport.

A drone fitted with explosives and a detonation mechanism was discovered on August 4 between Ukrainian cargo aircraft. The drone failed to explode.

A short time later, a separate drone apparently collided with a DHL cargo plane mid-air near Leipzig and the aircraft was forced to abort its landing and divert to Hanover with minor damage.

Orbán is a member of the new government led by centre-right Prime Minister Péter Magyar, which has been in office since May.

The government's stance towards Russia differs markedly from that of its predecessor under right-wing populist Viktor Orbán, who is not related to the current foreign minister.

Viktor Orbán's government maintained friendly relations with Moscow and largely refrained from criticizing Russia over its war against Ukraine.
