The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is seemingly set for a sweeping victory in Andhra Pradesh municipal elections that were held in 92 urban districts across the state.

The elections are an important contest between the ruling NDA coalition, comprising the Telugu Desam Party, Jana Sena Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party, and the Opposition Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP), often shortened to simply the YSR Congress Party.

The NDA nominees are leading in almost all municipal corporations and a majority of municipalities in the state.

The NDA is expected to win more than 90% of the wards/divisions in urban civic bodies.

The state's civic poll is being seen as a political test for the NDA led by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu. The result of the civic polls is also expected to offer an indication of the YSR Congress Party's popularity in the state's urban areas.

Over 4,000 evicted in Assam after homes of Bengali Muslim families bulldozed

More than 4,000 people were evicted in the northeastern state of Assam after authorities demolished homes during an eviction drive, officials told Indian media outlet Scroll.

The demolition drive took place in Assam's Dhubri district's Alamganj Part-IX village. Local media reported that most of the 4,000 displaced people were Bengali Muslims.

Citing Dhubri District Commissioner Dibakar Nath, Scroll reported that eviction notices had been served to residents occupying 500 acres of land. Authorities evicted the families, claiming it was government land under encroachment.

Nath claimed that residents had settled on the government land in different phases, with some arriving five years ago and others a decade ago. "Most of them have land in other places," he alleged.

However, residents have disputed this claim. Several families reportedly had been paying land revenue for years.

Over the past few years, eviction drives have become more frequent in Assam, under the Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party-led government.

In the last ten years of BJP rule in Assam, around 19,000 families, the majority of them Muslim, have been evicted from government land, according to data from the state revenue and disaster management department and the district authorities compiled by Scroll.

Amit Shah says 30 million deleted voters were 'Bangladeshi infiltrators'

Union Home Minister Amit Shah alleged the Congress Party wanted to come to power through bogus votesImage: ANI Video Grab

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday claimed that 30 million of the 130 million voters removed from the electoral rolls during the mass voter roll revisions were "Bangladeshi infiltrators," without offering further evidence.

Speaking at a rally in Hyderabad, Shah said, "Thirty million votes were those who never existed," Shah claimed. "These votes were those of Bangladeshi infiltrators…Tell me whether these votes should be cut or not?"

Doubling down on his attack on the opposition alliance INDIA bloc, Shah said the INDIA bloc rally held in Delhi on Sunday was not to save votes but to save infiltrators who form the vote bank of "Congress and company."

Protesters accuse India's government of rigging voter rolls

"The Congress party wants to capture elections through bogus voting," Shah alleged.

The opposition in India has been pushing back against the mass voter deletions and demanding the resignation of election chief Gyanesh Kumar, alleging his role in deliberate voter deletions favoring Shah's Bharatiya Janata Party.

Indian Navy rescues crew members from hijacked Iranian ship

The Indian Navy coordinated a 48-hour operation and rescued 20 crew members from the Iranian fishing vessel Azini after it was hijacked by armed pirates off the coast of Somalia.

In response, the Indian Navy tasked a mission-deployed warship to intervene, supported by a maritime reconnaissance aircraft.

The vessel was seized by Somali pirates on October 29.

According to officials, the operation was carried out 3,000 km from Mumbai in the Arabian Sea.

"Executing a swift and well-coordinated tactical intervention, the Indian Navy secured the vessel, overcame the pirate threat and ensured the safe release of all 20 crew members," the Navy said.

Iran thanked the Indian government for rescuing the crew.

"The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in New Delhi expresses its sincere appreciation to the Government of India, the Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force for their successful operation to rescue the 20 Iranian crew members of the fishing vessel Azini from pirates," the Iranian mission said in a post on social media.

Karjat residents protest tree felling for proposed power plant project

Residents in the Maharashtrian city of Karjat, which lies on the west coast, are pushing back against the large-scale tree felling for a proposed 3,000-MW pumped storage power plant in the region.

More than 32,000 trees are expected to be cleared for construction. According to a report by the Indian Express, nearly 1,100 trees were cut down before the operation was halted last week amid protests.

On Monday, a demonstration by residents, political groups, and environmental activists prompted an almost total shutdown of activity in Karjat.

The hydropower project is being built by Torrent Power is expected to be operational by 2029.

The project needs 377 hectares of land along the Sahyadri range in Raigad district and is expected to cut Maharashtra’s dependence on coal-fired power.

However, environmental experts have warned against the clearing of the forest on the west coast, warning it will disrupt the moisture cycles that bring rain to regions far away.

Severe cyclonic storm 'Murasu' began its landfall close to Ongole in the Prakasam district of the coastal state of Andhra Pradesh during the early hours on Tuesday.

The cyclone, which, according to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), is currently moving towards the north-northwest, has left a trail of destruction in the region.

Packing strong winds with heavy rains, the cyclone reportedly has uprooted thousands of trees and damaged electric poles and crops in the coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh.

Schools and colleges have been closed in at least eight districts in Andhra Pradesh as a precautionary measure in view of the heavy rainfall and strong winds.

Heavy spells of rainfall were also likely across south coastal Andhra Pradesh during the next 12 hours, IMD said.

The cyclone is currently over the west central Bay of Bengal close to the south Andhra Pradesh coast and is likely to weaken gradually into a cyclonic storm by noon and further into a deep depression by Tuesday midnight.
