Murali KrishnanA road altercation in Gurugram, a suburb of New Delhi, went viral last week after a 27-year-old female biker was allegedly chased and hit by a car. The case was only the latest example of how quickly a dispute on India's increasingly crowded roads can turn violent.
India's roads are notoriously dangerous, with government figures showing 485 people were killed in crashes on an average day in 2024. The data also indicates that the number of vehicles is currently growing much faster than the expansion of the road network.
Notably, SUVs accounted for about 2.63 million vehicles, or 56% of India's car sales, in the 12 months leading up to March 2026, according to industry data. While more SUVs on the road does not necessarily mean more aggressive driving, the vehicles' size, height and presence can change the dynamics of a confrontation.
"For some drivers it is an expression of strength and domination," former police officer Yashovardhan Azad told DW.

The Indian women's cricket team has won the nation its first Gold medal at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, after scoring the highest women's total in the event's history.
The team scored 216-3 with 18 fours and 13 sixes, defeating Sri Lanka for its second consecutive gold at the Asian Games.
Team captain Harmanpreet Kaur won the toss and opted to bat first, unleashing Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana as the opening pair. Mandhana's 79 runs undoubtedly helped cement India's victory.
At the same time, the Indian men's cricket team had a surprisingly close call with Japan.
The T20 World Champions narrowly survived an upset, edging out Japan by just two runs in a rain-shortened T20 match. This was the first-ever T20 international match between the teams, celebrating 75 years of diplomatic relations at Japan's Sano International Cricket Ground outside Tokyo.
Japan is ranked 41st by the International Cricket Council.
This match, however, was not part of the Asian Games. Japan will play the opening match of the men's T20 cricket at the event against Afghanistan on Thursday.

A massive 90-foot statue of Hindu deity Hanuman, in Texas, has become a political talking point ahead of the US midterm elections, after a conservative YouTuber called for its removal.
Named the 'Statue of the Union', the idol has been a controversial figure since it was erected in Sugarland, Texas in 2024. It has come back into focus after YouTuber and MAGA supporter Jesse Hughes brought it up on social media platform X.
“Btw, when we win, we are tearing this down,” YouTuber Jesse Hughes said, sharing a photograph of the statue. His comment sparked a backlash among Indian Americans, especially Hindus.
The Coalition of Hindus of North America expressed its "horror at the open religious bigotry being mainstreamed," after it was asked by an X user to respond to Hughes' statement.
"American Hindus are under attack as never before and we need to remember that it is upon each one of us to stand up and speak up against religious bigotry and Hinduphobia," it said.
About 570,000 Indians resided in the state of Texas as of 2023, according to Pew Research.

Tech giant Google on Monday said it has agreed to report content flagged as child sexual abuse material directly to Indian authorities.
Tech giants like Google and Meta, for years, have routed such reports through the US-based non-profit, National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.
Reuters had earlier reported that Indian government officials had pressed tech companies like Google and Microsoft to do so over concerns that the existing system delays reports and reaction time significantly.
Google "invests significantly to detect, deter, remove, and report child sexual abuse material," a spokesperson said, describing the move as part of the company's "ongoing discussions with the government of India."
Earlier this month, Meta also agreed to report child-safety related matters directly to law enforcement in India.
The push for child safety on social media comes amid a global debate on imposing age restrictions on social media and tightening laws to protect children online. In July, an investigative report by the BBC found that Instagram had been running paid advertisements promoting child sexual abuse material in India.
India's Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) later ordered Instagram to disable all ads and content promoting and facilitating access to such material.
The ministry also demanded a detailed explanation on the issue and held several rounds of discussions with top Meta executives.
India is the largest market by users for both Meta and Google, giving the Indian government significant leverage to propose specific changes for the Indian market.

India has co-sponsored an inaugural multilateralism summit on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York "at a time when the global order is under stress," its top diplomat has said.
India's Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said Delhi was glad to join the first ever Partners for Multilateralism, International Law, Peace & Prosperity (P4M) Summit held in the UN headquarters, the Press Trust of India reported.
The Indian foreign minister said that while the world has witnessed a steady rebalancing, "extreme competition, geopolitical tensions and actual conflicts have given this an entirely different character."
"If left unchecked, it would call into question the very spirit of international cooperation, and that is why it is so essential that multilateralism asserts itself strongly at this juncture," he said.
The summit was also co-sponsored by European Council President Antonio Costa, alongside countries including Kenya, Australia, Barbados, Brazil and Canada.
"We are at a critical moment for the world," Costa said. "Conflict is spreading, international law, including the United Nations Charter, is being repeatedly violated, including by permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, and the multilateral system is under stress."
Jaishankar's push for multilateralism comes when India is facing strained diplomatic ties with Washington under US President Donald Trump's second term. New Delhi's close relations with Russia and continued purchase of Russian oil has also been a point of strain with European counterparts. Several other countries are also forging new trade and security relations to diversify away from global powers like the US and China.

Minor allegedly gang-raped in South Delhi neighborhood
A 17-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped by three men posing as policemen in New Delhi on Monday evening, authorities said on Tuesday.
The girl had been visiting a temple in southeast Delhi with a male friend, before they both retreated to a nearby park.
There, they were intercepted by three men who claimed to be police officers, authorities said, as reported by Hindustan Times. One of the accused is said to have held the male friend down while the girl was gang-raped. The men also reportedly threatened the duo with arrest if they reported the assault. The incident took place at about 7:30 p.m. local time (0200 GMT).
The Police received a call about the incident soon after and reached the spot, taking the girl for a medical examination. Authorities have launched a formal investigation under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) and the Indian criminal law and teams were deployed to trace the accused.

One of the three accused of the gang-rape fired three shots at the police as they attempted to arrest him. During the exchange, one of the bullets struck an officer's bulletproof vest. The accused was shot in his right leg before he was arrested, news agency Press Trust of India reported.
The news of the Delhi gang-rape comes a day after a viral video from the eastern state of Bihar surfaced on social media, showing a group of about seven men molesting a minor girl while assaulting her male companion. The video has enraged netizens and political leaders alike.

The Indian capital woke up to disturbing news of a minor who was allegedly gang-raped in an upscale Delhi neighborhood on Monday evening. The police were called in soon after, but the incident is yet another reminder of how Delhi remains one of the least safe cities in the country for women.
Moving from the political capital to the financial capital, Mumbai, students of one of India's biggest tech institutes continue to speak out against extreme exam pressure after a 20-year-old allegedly took their own life last week. However, the institute's faculty are also protesting, backing a professor who was suspended from his deanship as a result.
On the global front, we have India's Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar attending the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York where he has met several European partners on the sidelines of the event.
