India to import more uranium from Australia for electricity generation

Australia and India have reached agreement on the export of uranium, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said while on a visit to Melbourne on Thursday.
"Today, we have reached an important agreement in the field of nuclear energy. This will open the path for uranium supply from Australia to India and give new strength to our clean energy objectives," Modi said, according to his office.
India, the world's most populous country, is expanding electricity generation from nuclear power in the face of rising demand. It has set an aim of expanding power generation from currently 8.78 gigawatts to 100 gigawatts by 2047.

Following talks between Modi and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, the Indian Foreign Ministry said the two countries had finalized the administrative arrangements for export of uranium to India "for exclusively peaceful purposes and under International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) safeguards."
No details on the quantities involved or timescale were released.
The deal has been agreed under the terms of the 2015 Australia-India Cooperation Agreement. According to a report from Australian mining company Cauldron Energy presented to parliament in January, there have been "some initial small shipments" to India.
