Indonesia's Anak Krakatau volcano erupted on Sunday, cancelling flights at Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta International Airport due to volcanic ash.

Indonesian meteorological agency BMKG said the volcano had been erupting since Friday. It produced a "lava fountain" and booming sounds, according to the agency. Two new eruptions were recorded on Sunday.

The volcano is located in the Sunda Strait between the islands of Java and Sumatra.

Ash had been identified as high as 6,000 metres on the Java side, with a plume of up to 15,000 metres on the Sumatra side, BMKG said.

Soekarno-Hatta International airport said it had suspended flight operations until 1:30pm (06:30 GMT) due to "increased eruptive activity" of the volcano, which is about 150 kilometres away. More than 200 flights had been impacted.

The volcano's huge eruption in 2018 triggered a tsunami along the coasts of Sumatra and Java, killing 430 people, and caused it to lose much of its visible height.

Anak Krakatau, which means Child of Kratakau, was created after the legendary eruption of Krakatau volcano in 1883, which killed an estimated 35,000 people.
