Iran on Thursday executed yet another man in connection with the protests that swept the country in January, the judiciary-linked news agency Mizan reported.

The man was sentenced to death in a particularly high-profile and controversial proceeding known as the Shahid-Alikhani Square case, in which 14 men were sentenced to death over the alleged killing of four police officers in the central city of Isfahan, according to official information.

In late July, Iranian authorities publicly executed two men in connection with the case at the same square in Isfahan, drawing a major outcry.

The man executed today was said to have been a foreign citizen, Mizan reported. It did not say which country he was from. According to the report, this was already the fifth execution linked to the Shahid-Alikhani case.

Under Iran's interpretation of Islamic law, the man was convicted for "waging war against God" and "corruption on earth," among other charges. Human rights activists criticize such verdicts leave room for arbitrary decisions.

Almost 30 men executed after protests

With the new executions, Iran's judiciary has now executed almost 30 men stemming from the protests and unrest.

The demonstrations broke out in late December in response to the country's economic crisis and quickly developed into mass protests against the authoritarian leadership, which the state violently suppressed. Thousands of demonstrators were killed.

Human rights groups have criticized Iran's strict use of the death penalty for years and accuse authorities of using executions to intimidate. According to Amnesty International, at least 2,159 people were executed in Iran last year, the highest recorded figure since 1981. Death sentences have also been carried out against alleged spies and political prisoners in connection with the US and Israeli war against Iran.
