Sirens sounded again in Israel on Monday morning after renewed rocket fire from Iran, with residents in many areas in the centre and north of the country told to go to shelters.

People have since been allowed to leave the shelters again. There were initially no reports of casualties.

Iran launched missiles against Israel on Sunday evening, its central military command confirmed, justifying the attack by citing "repeated violations" of the ceasefire in Lebanon by the Israeli military.

Israel then retaliated with attacks on Iran in the early morning hours of Monday.

Israel launched attacks on the Beirut suburbs earlier on Sunday. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz said the military had targeted "terrorist" headquarters after the Iran-backed Hezbollah militia fired at Israel.

Hezbollah is Iran's most important non-state ally. Tehran had previously warned that further Israeli attacks on the greater Beirut area would be viewed as a new escalation.
