Iran's vice president has congratulated the Houthi rebels after their advance along the Red Sea coast.

"We are delighted about the victories of the heroic Yemeni nation," Mohammad Reza Aref wrote on X, addressing the militia allied with Tehran.

On Friday the Houthis captured a strategic island in the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a key shipping route through the Red Sea, Yemeni government sources told dpa on Friday.

Mayyun is located at the southern entrance of the Bab al-Mandab Strait, at the heart of the maritime passage linking the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and the Arabian Sea, putting the militia group in a strong position to control the strait.

Yemen has been gripped by a civil war for years. The Houthis have been advancing along Yemen's Red Sea coast in recent days, capturing the key port city of Mokha from government forces on Thursday.
