Various locations in the cities of Sulaymaniyah and Erbil in Iraq's Kurdistan Region came under Iranian drone attacks on Friday, causing injuries and extensive material damage, a security source told dpa.

Iranian drones struck the city on Friday evening, causing casualties and damaging weapons depots belonging to the Kurdistan Region's Peshmerga forces, a security source in Sulaymaniyah said, speaking to dpa on condition of anonymity. The area is in the eastern Kurdistan Region, close to the Iran-Iraq border.

The source said that after nightfall, at around 8 pm (1700 GMT), a series of drone strikes targeted weapons depots in the Tasluja area, about 20 kilometres south-west of Sulaymaniyah. One strike triggered explosions at a storage facility, sending stored ammunition flying into the surrounding area.

The exploding ammunition injured civilians living in the nearby town of Tasluja, close to the mountain range where the depots are located, the source said. Ambulances were seen rushing to the scene and transporting the wounded to hospitals in Sulaymaniyah.

Meanwhile, Erbil came under Iranian drone attack for the third consecutive day.

Karwan Ali, an Erbil resident, told dpa that he heard four explosions in the city at around 9:30 pm.

He said it was not immediately clear which area had been targeted, but flames could be seen rising to the north east of Erbil.

Security authorities had not officially released detailed information on the outcome of the attacks at the time of reporting.arlier on Friday, the Kurdistan Region Presidency and the Kurdistan Regional Government each issued separate statements condemning the attacks, saying they further complicated the situation and undermined stability.

The Kurdistan Regional Government described the strikes as "unjustified" and called on Iraq's federal government in Baghdad and the international community to put an end to them.
