The Chargers have no shortage of young talent entering the 2026 season, but one player stands out as someone who could take a massive leap: Omarion Hampton.

After being selected in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft, Hampton showed flashes of why the Chargers believed he could become their long-term answer at running back. Unfortunately, an ankle injury interrupted what looked like a promising rookie campaign. He returned late in the season and reminded everyone of his physical running style, but it was clear he never had the opportunity to fully establish himself.

Now healthy and entering year 2, the circumstances are lining up for Hampton to have a breakout season.

The biggest reason is opportunity. The Chargers invested in their offensive line and should once again lean on a physical rushing attack under Jim Harbaugh. With Justin Herbert commanding respect from opposing defenses, Hampton won’t constantly face loaded boxes. Defenses have to account for Herbert’s arm, which should create favorable running lanes throughout the season.

The offensive line also has a chance to be one of the better units in football. Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt are healthy entering training camp while Tyler Biadasz brings stability at center. If that group plays to its potential, Hampton could have plenty of room to showcase the power and explosiveness that made him one of college football’s best running backs at North Carolina.

Another factor working in Hampton’s favor is offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel. His offenses have consistently created productive rushing attacks by using motion, misdirection and creative blocking concepts. While Hampton isn’t the same style of back as some of McDaniel’s previous runners, his combination of vision, contact balance and burst fits perfectly in a scheme designed to create space. The Chargers have also added blocking help with tight end Charlie Kolar, another move that could strengthen the ground game.

Perhaps the most encouraging sign is the growing confidence surrounding Hampton. Multiple analysts have identified him as one of the NFL’s top breakout candidates for 2026, and even fantasy football experts expect him to take a significant leap. That kind of buzz doesn’t guarantee production, but it reflects how highly people around the league view his talent entering his second season.

Of course, staying healthy will be the biggest key. Hampton’s rookie season was derailed by injury, and availability is often the difference between potential and production. If he can stay on the field for 17 games, there’s every reason to believe he can become the centerpiece of the Chargers’ rushing attack.

A 1,200-yard rushing season with double-digit touchdowns isn’t out of the question. More importantly, Hampton has the ability to become the type of back who keeps defenses honest and takes pressure off Herbert. That’s exactly the balance Harbaugh wants on offense.

The Chargers have playoff aspirations in 2026, and they’ll need young players to elevate their game to get there. Omarion Hampton looks like one of the best bets on the roster to do exactly that. If everything comes together, this could be the season he establishes himself as one of the AFC’s rising stars.
